Pensacola, FL – The City of Pensacola and the United Soccer League (USL) have announced an exclusive negotiation period to assess the potential for bringing professional men’s and women’s soccer teams to Downtown Pensacola. Over the next year, discussions will focus on the feasibility of a stadium, funding opportunities, and the broader impact on the community’s entertainment landscape.
Pensacola: A Proven Soccer Hub
Pensacola is no stranger to high-level soccer, as the city proudly hosts both the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and NAIA Women’s Soccer Championships. The SEC tournament, held annually at Ashton Brosnaham Soccer Complex since 2022, has quickly become one of the premier collegiate events in the nation.
In 2024, Pensacola Sports secured an agreement with the SEC to continue hosting the championship through 2026, with an option to extend through 2029. The tournament has seen record-breaking attendance and growing media coverage, further cementing Pensacola’s reputation as a soccer destination. Additionally, the NAIA Women’s Soccer Championship brings nationwide talent to the Gulf Coast, reinforcing the city’s ability to host soccer events successfully.
A New Era for Soccer in Pensacola
The partnership between the USL and the City of Pensacola marks a significant step toward expanding professional sports in the region. With Pensacola’s passionate sports fanbase and a history of supporting professional teams, the city presents a promising market for soccer.
“We are thrilled to explore the opportunity of bringing both USL men’s and women’s teams to Pensacola,” said Justin Papadakis, USL Deputy CEO & Chief Real Estate Officer. “Pensacola has the potential to become a thriving soccer market, aligning with USL’s vision of growing the sport at all levels. This collaboration could enhance public spaces, expand entertainment options, and boost local businesses.”
Mayor D.C. Reeves echoed this enthusiasm: “USL is a brand that has delivered an exceptional product on the field. Our city has proven its ability to support professional sports, and we expect our community would embrace this league with open arms.”
USL’s Vision for Expansion
Founded in 1986, the USL is the largest and fastest-growing soccer organization in the U.S., offering a structured development pathway from youth to professional levels. It includes multiple leagues, such as the USL Championship (Division II), USL League One (Division III), and the newly launched USL Super League (Division I for women).
Pensacola’s potential USL League One team would join a growing league that has expanded aggressively in recent years, with Florida cities such as Naples and Sarasota already part of the league’s roadmap. The USL is also investing in a long-term vision that could introduce a European-style promotion and relegation system, further elevating competition.
What’s Next for Soccer in Pensacola?
As part of the agreement, the USL will invest approximately $200,000 in feasibility studies, covering site selection, infrastructure, local ownership recruitment, and economic impact assessments. While no stadium location has been confirmed, officials are exploring options that could accommodate not only soccer but also other sporting events, concerts, and community gatherings.
Mayor Reeves emphasized the importance of a multi-use facility: “For the model to work, a new stadium would have to host more than just soccer—it would need to accommodate high school football, concerts, and festivals. We’re evaluating the best possible locations downtown.” The city will collaborate with Escambia County, the Pensacola Sports Association, and other stakeholders to ensure the best possible outcome for both fans and the local economy.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching, soccer interest in the U.S. is at an all-time high, making this the perfect moment for Pensacola to establish itself as a key soccer market. If successful, this partnership with the USL could usher in a new era of professional sports in the city, driving economic growth and fostering a deeper connection between the community and the global game.
